5s’s is a name that is given to the organizational methodology used by companies and it is more of Japanese term. The name is derived from the Japanese words; seiri, seiton, seiso, seiketsu and shitsuke thereby giving it the name 5s. As you can clearly see in the list of the 5 words all of them start with the letter S. Decision making in any organization is done with the use of a methodology or rather a defined approach by the organization. The program is meant to build an understanding within a working environment. This will include setting up the goals and fundamental principles that need to be followed by an organization.

The 5 S’s of 5s explained
Seiso (shine)
This often stands for cleanliness in a working environment and it is often noted as shine or sweeping. A clean environment is much conducive for working and hence product quality is ensured all the time.

Seiketsu (standardization)
Most people will describe this as standardized cleanup. In simple working environments there is always a norm that needs to be followed by the working staff. This may involve the way that they work or rather the way in which they ensure that their workspace is clean all the time. Seiketsu can also be used as a way of maintaining the given pillars of management and thus giving them a norm to follow with regards to management. This is often useful in the event whereby management is changed. This will ensure that the new management does not affect the normal running of the business.

Shitsuke (Sustain)
This is often regarded as the final stages of the company methodology or rather the 5s program. This stage is that of discipline or rather maintaining the best of conduct within the working environment. All the employees always need to maintain self-discipline all the time and ensure that work is never compromised due to lack of discipline.
